Singer Kim Heung Guk's defamation suit has been dismissed by the court.
Judge Chung Dong Joo of the Seoul Central District Court ruled against a claim filed by Kim Heung Guk for damages for a sexual assault lawsuit brought forward by victim 'A'.
In an interview with media outlet in March last year, 'A' alleged that she was sexually assaulted in November 2016 by Kim Heung Guk who she met while working as an insurance planner. She claimed that she went out for drinks with him and a group of acquaintances and later woke up naked next to the singer. 'A' later filed a complaint with the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutor's Office on charges of rape and defamation. Around the time the reports broke, two anonymous men came forward alleging that 'A' had tried to obtain money through fraud under false promises of marriage.
Kim Heung Guk strongly denied the sexual assault stating that the woman 'A' had approached him intentionally and he had evidence to back his claim. He said that the woman had asked him for money saying that she needed it for a lawsuit he was facing. He stated, "I'm about to lose everything I worked for in the entertainment industry for 30 years. Whats even more painful is the misunderstanding from my wife and family. I'm also very sorry to my fans. I will sincerely cooperate with investigations so that the truth will come out as soon as possible."
The Gwangjin Police Department later declared that there wasn't enough evidence to prove Kim guilty of sexual assault and dismissed the case. Kim then filed a suit against her for false accusations and defamation asking for 200 million won (~$170,000) for mental and physical damage.
Meanwhile, after court dismissal, Kim Heung Guk has stated that he has no plans to appeal.
