(G)I-DLE's Jeon Soyeon has admitted to plagiarizing ATEEZ.
On the 27th, Soyeon released 'SUN' after participating in MBC's 'My Teenage Girl' program and Pop Time and Soyeon credited as composers. However, after the broadcast, suspicions arose that some parts in the song were similar to ATEEZ's 'Wave' causing controversy.
Netizens flooded online communities demanding a public apology from Soyeon for plagiarism. A fan pointed out, "She clearly plagiarized but is remaining silent. Apologize to ATEEZ and its fans!"
The next day, KQ Entertainment announced, "song credits were stolen without our permission. We received a number of reports through our official channel and email that the chorus melody in ATEEZ's 'Wave' released in 2019 is similar to her song. Accordingly, while monitoring relevant contents, we later discovered our producing team 'Eden-ary' was silently added to the credits."
Afterwards, G-IDLE's agency CUBE Entertainment issued an apology and stated, "we would like to convey our position regarding plagiarism controversy. First off, we bow our heads in apology for causing confusion with the release of Soyeon's contest song 'SUN.' Immediately after the broadcast, we recognized similarities of some melodies through internal monitoring so our artist communicated the situation directly to the composer and apologized. We acknowledge similarities in the song so Soyeon consulted with the composer and requested a credit correction through the production company. We will make sure such a situation does not happen in the future."
Meanwhile, Soyeon is known among fans as a "genius composer-dol" with songwriting and composer talents and joined panel of MBC's program. However, plagiarism accusations seem to have inevitably damaged her image.
- [+391, -95] If she plagiarized, shouldn't she apologize publicly? Things won't end like this.
- [+387, -85] Why is ATEEZ getting cursed? What did they do wrong? If I were them, I'd be very upset.
- [+338, -256] Huh? Soyeon is going to get witch-hunted by ATINY on Twitter now f*ck ã…‹ã…‹
- [+166, -3] This is seriously disappointing in so many ways...Soyeon is someone that has been in the idol industry for a long time and knows the worth of a song to a composer. Just reaching an agreement without any explanation isn't going to quell her controversy.
- [+160, -93] A 'genius composer-dol' recognized only by her agency and fans ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
- [+145, -0] So absurd;; so there was no agreement;
- [+144, -0] They came to an agreement after the plagiarism, so why is victim idol group getting hit?
- [+83, -2] This is a huge deal. An active idol plagiarized a song while participating in a competition and admitted to it. This doesn't happen often no? If this were a more famous idol, it would've been an uproar!
- [+82, -1] Honestly, no one even knows what the apology was. The fact that she plagiarized is highly problematic, she should've at least tried to come to an agreement and credit the composer instead of quietly adding their name in.
- [+73, -0] 'Wave' is a song that's precious to ATEEZ and ATINY so that's why this is even more upsetting.
- [+70, -10] Soyeon fans were so passionate yesterday and kept cursing ATEEZ fans, but where are they now? Where did they all go ã…‹ã…‹?
- [+68, -15] She needs to be exiled from the music industry!
