"Our Jennie was casted for this?"
"This isn't just a waste of talent, it's a waste of Jennie."
Blackpink fans are in deep anger over Jennie's cameo in HBO drama 'The Idol.'
After release in North America on the 4th, although international star Jennie was cast, her appearance in the drama was for only 10 minutes and she only had 3 lines of dialogue. Fans are angry that Jennie's talent was wasted and her reputation ruined by unnecessary X-rated sex scenes.
In the first episode, Jennie, who plays a backup dancer and friend to main character Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) doesn't have much of a role. She is captured putting on an intense sensual performance with several male dancers on stage wearing only shorts and a bra top. Jennie shocked fans with her "19+ dance" that appeared to imitate s*x acts in the midst of male dancers.
In the drama, Jennie only has 3-lines of dialogue that require acting skills causing fans to question YG for green lighting her appearance writing, "What was YG doing?"
Putting aside Jennie's scene, 'The Idol' is getting criticized by local media for it's overtly sexual scenes. From the time of release at the Cannes International Film Festival, the drama was criticized for being "more harmful and worse than rumored (Rolling Stone)." Another outlet also wrote, "They're enjoying the exploitation while pretending to expose the exploitation of idols (Time)." Variety was also quoted stating, "it's a lewd and lecherous male fantasy. The drama seems to focus more on the 19+ spectacle than story development."
Regarding her dance scene, Jennie appeared in the making video released by HBO and her comments are catching attention. Jennie is seen stating, "I didn't spend much time learning the choreo used for filming. But thankfully, it's something I always do so it came naturally to me. I'm very grateful." As Jennie revealed, she didn't need to learn acting or choreography because the part itself was small.
