Article: In the age of less than 10% viewership ratings...what is the future of broadcasting?
Source: Media Today
IU's drama 'Hotel Del Luna' has recorded the highest viewership ratings ever for a tvN drama in 2019.
'Hotel del Luna' aired its final episode on the 2nd and recorded an average viewership rating of 12% (based on Nielsen Korea). This is the highest rating ever for a tvN drama this year. Back in the 1990s and 2000s, achieving a viewership rating of 20% was the norm. But nowadays, a 10% viewership has now become the dream viewership rating as its very hard to attain.
Broadcast ratings have been a downward trend since the late 2000s due to rapid growth of cable channels like tvN and OCN and general programming channels like JTBC and Channel A.
Also, streaming services like YouTube and OTT services like Netflix have turned the media environment into a battlefield making it harder for audiences to focus on a particular channel or program, compared to before.
Therefore for a drama to achieve a viewership rating greater than 5% is a huge feat.
Congratulations to IU and the cast of 'Hotel del Luna'.
- [+1,247, -17] It's because there's more and more soap-like dramas with awkward production and the content is so cliche. There's also too many muk-bang shows, and entertainment shows for kids with singer disease and way too many audition programs. It's not like the old days.

- [+182, -41] The stations have become lap dogs for Moon's criminal regime. It's been a long time since I left broadcast TV for YouTube. The only decent shows in Korea is that journalistic talk show and MBC 'Straight'.

- [+70, -1] There's nothing to watch except Muk-bang shows and audition programs.
- [+27, -6] KBS MBC are basically dogs for the Moon regime. I'd rather watch movies, YouTube, Channel A and TV Chosun. Way more trustworthy.
- [+20, -0] KBS needs to stop ripping off tax payer money. I've yet to watch anything there for 3 years.
