A deepfake video using the image of TWICE's Tzuyu has become a hot topic online.
Recently a video of Tzuyu's face synthesized with deep fake technology was posted on YouTube over actress Kang Hana's face from tvN drama 'Startup." Although the video was made my amateurs, many people that saw it responded saying they got "goosebumps." Even though Kang Hana and Tzuyu have a 5cm height difference, it's not easily apparent in the video. The video is attracting attention from fans both at home and overseas and has over 300,000 views.
Experts explain that deepfake technology is developing at a rapid pace and it's only a matter of time until it'll be hard to distinguish fake from reality with the latest graphic engine. However, there are growing concerns that sophisticated deepfake could be used as a criminal tool.
Already deepfake has been used as a tool for illegal pornography in the latest Nth Room incident that involved Korean idols and celebs. According to a survey, 25% of world's deep fake porn is reportedly of Korean celebrities.
Tzuyu's deepfake video was reportedly made without permission from her agency JYP and even Chinese media have pointed out that "there is a growing concern that deepfake will be used for crimes especially among entertainers."
Lawyer Lee Jang-sik stated, "The scale of damage can increase rapidly depending on the speed the deepfake spreads as it becomes sophisticated. Technology, legal, and institutional devices need to check and block deepfakes early on."
