The article alleges "cover up" by police by taking a look at three controversial cases that police have closed without conducting thorough investigations due to outside "pressure."
Jung-in's abuse case
Even after police received three reports of abuse, they closed the case without separating the child from the abusive parents and Jung-in was later discovered dead. That's when the investigation was initiated. After public's anger exploded, the police chief (6 months in the position) apologized to the public.
Mayor Park Won-soon's sexual assault case
National Human Rights Commission concluded that Mayor Park's words and actions obviously constituted sexual harassment and the prosecution released texts from Mayor Park admitting that "he was wrong" adding, "it seems difficult to overcome this wave anyway."
Mayor Park was later discovered dead in the mountains (from alleged suicide) and case terminated because prosecution do not have power to indict a dead person.
Vice Minister Lee Yong-gu taxi driver assault case
Even after police confirmed Vice Minister Lee Yong-gu assaulted a taxi driver from black box video, the investigator in charge did not even report it to top line. Police have formed a fact-finding team to look into the background of false reports and whether there was external "pressure" but there's growing criticism that "investigators are just trying to discipline internally and cut off the tail."
In the meantime, public is questioning why police have the unilateral power to terminate controversial investigations and whether this will change in the future.
- [+1,579, -18] This is the result of police taking bribes and living comfortably doing dirty things in the back. I really hope they're struck by lightning. Expose their personal information to the public! Why are we a country that covers up these dirty things by criminals?
- [+961, -20] A lot of police that barely know anything in their roles are being given power to terminate investigations. How is this any different from putting a gun in the hands of a choding?
- [+790, -11] Just from those cases alone Jung-in's case, Lee Yong-gu's assault case etc., you can tell police don't work for the people but for the government. Police reform is urgently needed that prosecution reform. The rights of police and prosecution to unilaterally terminate investigations needs to canceled!!
- [+641, -5] Why are police even given a right to terminate investigations?? This gives them authority to end any unsuccessful or investigations they think are annoying. Wake up!!
- [+447, -32] I remember sending in a blackbox video of a traffic violation and police told me that my data was "insufficient." I almost spit out my food because of how ridiculous it was.
- [+92, -0] Jang Ha-young, Anseong's infant torture murder case..
- [+37, -1] Makes you wonder whether the reason why chief of police has power to terminate investigations over the prosecutor general is because its easier to bribe them?
- [+36, -1] Police in our neighborhood park their cars in a corner and sleep inside everyday. Ah ~I want to take a photo and post it on sns but since our neighborhood is bit well off I figure it's fine if they take a break. I get not all police are like that but from standpoint of citizens, what do they want us to think? How frustrating it must be for those actually working hard?
- [+24, -0] What's even the point of reporting to police if they won't investigate it?
