Popular actor Gong Yoo's Sci-fi drama is being hit with a slew of negative reviews.
Hong Kong's 'South China Morning Post (SCMP)' called it "The Worst Netflix TV show of the year" and a Netflix user lamented, "I endured until the 3rd episode but I ended up turning it off."
'The Silent Sea,' starring Gong Yoo and Bae Doo Na, is the first Sci-Fi (SF) drama in South Korea. In the the narrative, the Republic of Korea Space Agency sends an elite crew to an abandoned research base on the moon to find the solution to the depletion of essential resources on earth.
The drama is being criticized for being "boring" and although Netflix presents new Korean content every month, recent content hasn't been at the level of 'Squid Game.'
According to industry officials on the 26th, there have been a series of harsh criticisms over the drama both at home and abroad with SCMP stating, "The poor design and chaotic combination of space flights, and completely bizarre moonwalk is the worst ever seen on TV this year."
The drama's global ranking is also below expectations ranking 7th in "global" Netflix TV category according to Flix Patrol. It ranked 3rd in Singapore and Thailand, 4th in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Vietnam and 5th in Canada and U.S. This is very poor performance compared to another Netflix original 'Hellbound' that was released in November, and ranked 1st in 24 hours after release.
Meanwhile, Netflix has not been able to make any significant box office hits since 'Squid Game' in September. Netflix had predicted an increase of 8.5 million new paid subscribers in the 4th quarter however doubts are growing whether they'll be able to achieve this.
As a result, Netflix's stock price has been sluggish, trading at $614.09 (~ 728,000 won). This is 12.39% decrease from Nov 17th. The stock hit an all-time high during 'Squid Game' at $700.99.
- [+5,590, -602] Uh...I enjoyed the 'Silent Sea'...
- [+2,974, -154] I enjoyed it? So what they didn't rank #1? Is 7th place a bad place to start? When are we going to stop calling something a "flop" just because it doesn't rank #1..
- [+1,813, -105] I enjoyed it. So just because it's a Korean show it has to hit same level of success as 'Squid Game?' I was impressed at how our country was able to create this genre now too so it's bound to catch on and more shows will come out with this genre. The CG wasn't awkward at all and I thought it was very well made! Stop throwing hate. If you have nothing nice to say just shut your mouth.
- [+1,209, -191] I didn't really enjoy 'Squid Game' or 'Hellbound' either...I just watched it because it was trending and everyone around me was going crazy over it..
- [+816, -212] I fell asleep watching it..
- [+472, -90] I hated it right way after I found out it was a Jung Woo-sung production.
- [+188, -24] This was more enjoyable to watch than 'Hellbound'..
- [+128, -12] I saw Jung Woosung and immediately blocked it..
- [+55, -4] What did you expect for a Jung Woo-sung production...
- [+57, -12] It flopped because of the lack of directing ability of the music producer. Also that combination of supporting actors is one you never see. And the fact that Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae were also involved in the production with Jung Woo-sung as general PD ~ Ugh, what a waste of money. I dropped it right away.
