Police have launched a compulsory investigation on actor Yoo Ah-in for "drug abuse."
According to exclusive report by Hankook Ilbo on the 9th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's drug crime investigation team seized and searched several hospitals and clinics, including plastic surgery clinics in Gangnam-gu and Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 8th. During the process, they uncovered several instances where Yoo Ah-in had been taking propofol at various hospitals since early 2021 and have secured his related medical records.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) prohibits the administration of propofol, a general anesthetic inducer, more than once a month, however it was discovered that Yoo Ah-in administered propofol at several hospitals, demanding various prescriptions. Even if propofol was administered in a specific hospital, it's said to be difficult to confirm it in other hospitals.
The MFDS was able to uncover the so-called "medical shopping" incident in which Yoo-Ah in was prescribed propofol at various hospitals in 2021 through use of an integrated narcotics management system that contains information about narcotics and psychotropic medicines prescribed by hospitals and patients taking the drugs. As a result, they became suspicious of Yoo Ah-in's habitual use of medication and requested police investigations in November last year.
An official from the MFDS revealed, "As a result of expert review, it was found that an excessive amount of propofol was prescribed even if we take into account assumptions he might've had "multiple" diseases at the same time."
The official confirmed, "We requested investigations into a total of 51 people including Yoo Ah-in."
Meanwhile, Yoo-Ah's agency stated on the 8th, "We're actively cooperating with related investigations and will actively explain the problematic areas."
