Blackpink Jennie's drama debut is causing controversy in Korea.
On the 5th, HBO drama 'The Idol' aired it's first broadcast following premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last May. However, after the 1st and 2nd screenings at the film festival, a dark cloud hung over the work as harsh criticisms poured out. In particular, criticisms arose over stimulating 19+ scenes and concerns about Jennie's role in the drama grew.
The first episode released in the U.S attracted viewers' attention with unconventional scenes. Lily-Rose Depp, who plays the lead role, as well as her friend and dancer Jennie, was seen dancing provocatively with male dancers in the MV filming. Jennie showed off passionate gestures and facial expressions but her unconventional dance in the drama outside of the stage felt somewhat unfamiliar.
U.S media outlet Variety strongly criticized the work stating, "looks like a lewd and lecherous male fantasy." Rolling Stone also criticized it as a "terrible, brutal, and much worse-than-expected drama with a predatory eye and take on young female idols."
'The Idol' is a drama about the relationships surrounding a rising pop idol and the music industry world. Johnny Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp is the main star in the drama that's produced by Canadian pop superstar The Weeknd. In addition, director Sam Levinson, who was recognized for his directing skills in HBO series 'Euphoria' took the megaphone.
Jennie plays Dyanne, a backup dancer and friend of main character Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp).
- [+1,168, -221] Those dance movements are something else already but adding in her facial expressions .. ugh I seriously understand now why she's getting criticized for filming p*rn overseas
- [+998, -21] Seeing those s*x clips from Jennie.. I think I know why this drama has such bad ratings..
- [+993, -62] I don't see this as a creative work at all... this is not a drama meant to teach lessons to kids about drugs or anything like Euphoria. I'm seriously curious about Jennie's thoughts. Why would she choose to appear in a drama with such dirty scenes?
- [+624, -11] YG worked so hard to media play her as Human Chanel and had her wrapped in luxury only for Jennie to put out dirty p*rn like this? Why would she come out in a role like that?
- [+623, -16] Ah why is this so f*cking cheap?.. it's really weird.. just why
- [+568, -206] I see a lot of kids in the comments have lost their mentals and don't know what's going on. Guys, it's a "scripted" drama and Jennie is one of the actors putting out an "act." Why is Jennie getting cursed and called dirty and cheap? Why aren't you cursing all those actors that took on iljin roles in dramas and put out sex scenes? Can't you tell the difference between drama and reality??!
- [+313, -1] The Weeknd's image is seriously rockbottom with this drama now ㅋㅋㅋ. They've been getting criticized a lot in the U.S. I don't think we're going to hear their songs in the future..
- [+298, -2] She was quite proud boasting about this everywhere when she was filming dirty X-rated mid-air sex scenes with men.. her role was really this cheapㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
- [+266, -29] V must be proud looking at his girlfriend's first work as an actress ㅋㅋㅋ
- [+223, -4] Ah.. Blackpink's image is seriously dirty now...
- [+210, -8] I feel like I've just gotten a glimpse into Jennie's entire s*x life now and I don't think it's pretty at all.. it's quite dirty
- [+196, -3] Ah really ㅋ ㅋㅋㅋ ㅋㅋㅋ.. it's been a while since she's put in this much work at their own concert..
- [+174, -8] Our Human Chanel
- [+171, -6] Well, it hasn't been that long since we saw her dancing naked at their concert. She's infamous for sitting on a white man's lap at an afterparty and was even caught kissing some guy on the cheek.
