More concerns are being raised about Blackpink Jennie's debut drama in HBO's 'The Idol.'
On the 16th, a British daily newspaper, The Guardian, wrote an article titled, "Cool, Sexy, Terrible Acting: Why are cigarettes making a comeback in TV dramas?" They wrote, "cigarettes are becoming a sort of "co star" in the controversial drama 'The Idol.' Jocelyn, the main character, played by Lily-Rose Depp in the real-life drama depicts a chain smoking scene where she smokes 3 cigarettes in the first 5 minutes. She also smashes a pack of cigarettes."
"In particular, even though Netflix promised to reduce tobacco use, cigarettes appeared every time in 'Queens Gambit' and 'Umbrella Academy' that were streamed by millions of people. Cigarettes made an appearance in some way in 28 of this year's 39 Academy Award nominations."
They added, "Teenagers who are exposed to smoking through movies and other things are 2-3 times more likely to start smoking on their own."
Regarding the controversy, singer-songwriter and drama producer/actor The Weeknd stated in an interview with fashion magazine GQ, "I like it. I know our story is dark and controversial but I think we depicted what we wanted say."
Meanwhile, the drama is embroiled in controversy for exhaustively exploiting Jennie to fulfill male-centered sexual fantasies. Jennie's X-rated dance with 2 men is also continuing to cause controversy.
