Korean actresses are causing controversy for indecent over exposure on Netflix.
While exposure is inevitable if absolutely necessary for the message and flow of the drama, it's not an essential element to get naked just for sensational stimulation? Following recent works released by Netflix, naked figures are appearing so casually.
Netflix recently released 'Mask Girl' that has become a hot topic. There are clearly divided likes and dislikes as stimulating elements such as murder, assault, and adultery are listed in its unconventional and uncomfortable development. Among them, and what's particularly noteworthy, is the naked exposure of female protagonist Kim Mo-mi (Lee Han-byeol, Nana). Lee Han-byeol takes off all her clothes while broadcasting on the internet while drunk, and Nana enters the prison and takes off her clothes for a prosecutor, exposing her naked back. Regardless of whether or not a substitute was used, it's an unconventional scene for an actress.
In particular, Nana is a character who does not play a large part in 'Mask Girl.' Since 7 episodes are played by 3 people and each episode is centered around a character, Nana doesn't have much screen time where her face is shown as 'Mask Girl.' They why focus is on exposure and her acting skills aren't evaluated to the level of other supporting actors. She underwent an unconventional transformation but only exposure remained.
Previously, Cha Joo-young (played by Choi Hye-jeong) also caught attention for upper body exposure and naked back in Part 2. She directly explained the over exposure as being CGI. She revealed in an interview, "I believed the breast exposure was a necessary scene. Because it was a role with a breast surgery setting, the necessary parts were processed through CG but my body was also mixed in so there was no burden on exposure."
Nevertheless, Cha Ju-young's father left the house after seeing her exposed. She revealed, "I told my dad a bit about it. It was a shocking scene but the 'The Glory' had come out at the time and my dad said he wanted to watch the drama first. But in the end, after seeing the scene, he left the house."
'House of Paper (Money Heist: Korea)' that was released last year also caught attention after exposing a naked bed scene along with mixed reviews. The drama received a lot of criticism for it's overly similar situation with the original, disintegration of characters, and awkward acting.
At the same time, the public's attention was focused on the bed scene. In particular, Kim Ji-hoon and Lee Joo-bin drew attention for their unconventional bed scene. Lee Ju-bin stated, "I tend to refrain from including provocative scenes that aren't necessary for the drama but after receiving the entire script, I was convinced. I didn't lose weight but I exercised like crazy."
This was only possible because they're all OTT, not domestic dramas. In the past, there were very few works where naked exposure appeared in movies. However, OTT is a platform where even minors can view dramas through bypass methods. It is time to think about whether these high-level exposures are merely being generalized as shocking or stimulating.
