The Gwanak-gu murderer accused of killing his wife and son has been sentenced in court.

On the 24th, Cho (42) underwent trial for murder and other charges at Seoul Central District Court. Cho was previously accused of stabbing his wife A (41) and son B (6) at his home in Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, between 8:56 pm and 1:35 am on Aug. 21 and Aug. 22 last year. Based on contents of victims' stomachs, it is believed they died 4-6 hours after eating.

The court eventually saw Cho as the culprit even though no criminal weapon was found and there were no CCTV footage or witnesses. Cash and valuables were found on the dressing table next to the bed where the victims died but no trace or meaningful fingerprints were found inside the house. In addition, the court explained that it is natural to believe that someone who knows the password of the front door committed the crime because it is highly unlikely that other criminals entered the area other than through the front door.

According to testimonies obtained by police, Cho borrowed money from people around him for his horse-race gambling since May last year and spent millions of won on credit card loans, leaving about 1,900 won ($1.50) in his account three days before the incident.

Police also thought his reaction to the news his wife and son were dead was very suspicious. All he said was "Yes?" and continued to answer all other questions without emotion. Shortly after the victims were believed to been murdered, Cho got gas, a car wash, a haircut and took a bath. Police believe he went back to the villa shortly to take a bath in order to remove all evidence of the crime (blood).

Another cause for suspicion, was the fact that he downloaded and watched a thriller film titled "The Truth" that details a wife's murder. Also the fact that he left the funeral home after twenty minutes was very suspicious. Prosecution believes Cho carefully planned the murders for a long time because he believed his wife had an affair.

The court sentenced Cho to life in prison but rejected the request to attach a location-tracking device [anklet] on Cho citing that there wasn't enough proof that he would relapse to prior behaviors.

The victim's sister revealed to reporters, "To be honest I can't be satisfied with any punishment because my sister and nephew are still gone. I hope our country will have stronger laws when it comes to murder and brutal crimes against women and children."

Cho likely to appeal the ruling due to his earlier claims in court that "he did not kill his wife and son."
