Why did Naver change the reaction emoji on entertainment articles?

Source: Joongang

I received quite a few questions on this topic so I figured I'd share an update with fans also curious about the subject.

On May 15th, Naver announced a change in its reaction emoji available on entertainment articles shared on their platform as a way to protect celebrities from malicious commenters.

Previously, users were able to react with "warm and fuzzy", "angry", and "want a follow-up article" for a total of 5 emoji reactions (see below).
From the left: "Like", "Warm and Fuzzy", "Sad", "Angry", "I want a follow-up article"

But these reactions have now been replaced with "support", "congratulations," "looking forward to it" and "surprised" for a total of 6 emoji.
From the left: "Love", "Cheer (support)", "Congratulations", "Looking forward to it", "Surprised", "Sad"

Naver explained that they developed the new reaction emoji by analyzing users comment data and wanted to focus on value-centric and positive expressions. A Naver official revealed that, "they wanted to get rid of the side effects caused by negative emoji like "angry" and replace this with more positive expressions like "cheer" and "Looking forward to it."

In the meantime, all other articles shared in the main news section of Naver will still retain the original emoji as well as the comment section.
  1. [+155, -6] I get why they'd want to remove the comment section to get rid of malicious commentersㅋㅋㅋ. But if the article makes you angry, aren't they suppressing public's reactions by removing the "angry" emoticon?
  2. [+63, -0] ㅋㅋㅋㅋAre we still in a democracy?
  3. [+32, -3] Is this a communist party?
  4. [+17, -0] So no freedom of expressionㅋㅋ
  5. [+11, -2] I think having comment section was having freedom of expression. I don't know why we have to passively accept these unilaterally written articles. Change back the emoji and add back the comment section too.
  6. [+8, -0] So I can't even express how angry I am, I'm just stuck with "disappointment." We need to get rid of Naver.
  7. [+8, -0] A world where everyone is always happy just seems strange..
